Post-Operative Instructions: Fluoride Varnish Application

Thank you for visiting our office today! To ensure the fluoride varnish works effectively, please follow these guidelines:

Immediate Care Instructions:

  1. Do Not Brush or Floss: Avoid brushing or flossing your teeth for at least 4–6 hours after the application. For best results, wait until the next morning.
  2. Avoid Eating or Drinking Hot Foods/Beverages: Stick to soft, cold, or lukewarm foods and drinks for the first few hours. Avoid crunchy, sticky, or abrasive foods (like chips or gum).
  3. Minimize Rinsing: Refrain from using mouthwash or excessive rinsing to allow the fluoride to penetrate your teeth.

Dietary Recommendations:

  • Eat Soft Foods: Soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes are safe options.
  • Limit Sugary Foods: Avoid sweets or sugary beverages for the rest of the day to maximize the varnish’s effect.

What to Expect:

  • Appearance: Your teeth may feel slightly sticky or appear yellowish; this is normal and will fade once you brush.
  • Effectiveness: The varnish continues to strengthen your enamel for several hours after application.

Long-Term Benefits:

  • Fluoride varnish helps prevent cavities by making your teeth more resistant to decay.
  • Regular applications (2–4 times per year) are recommended, depending on your risk for cavities.
